Rainy and cold

I sure hope it’s not raining at Churchill, or I’ll have to rethink my Derby picks! Actually, I’d stick with Bandini anyway.

I remember last year, when the weather was so bad we lost video contact. But it came back in time to see Smarty Jones win the hearts of most racing (and many non-racing) fans all over the world.

I’m excited about today!!!

Yesterday, I did my errands in the city and came back out as soon as possible. After Thursday’s bombing, the vibe is an interesting mix of tension and almost – well, not quite relief, but more of “I told you so”. We knew it wasn’t a matter of “if” but “when”. We’re tired of living under siege. We’re sick of much of the rest of the country telling us to “get over” 9/11. And we want the resources promised to us by the Bush Administration. No one was hurt this time. But there’s no doubt there will be more attacks, and we don’t want there to be another one on the scale of 9/11. It’s not only possible that it will be, it’s probable, especially with the government reneging on their promises.

Took my guests shopping in White Plains and managed to sneak in buying a few Mother’s Day gifts. Now, I have to find a place to wrap them without being discovered. It might end up happening in the bathroom.

Gotta make my contribution for the Derby party – I’m making my infamous devilled eggs again (based on the recipe from The New Basics cookbook) and a selection of tea sandwiches – salmon & cucumber, radish and butter, watercress.

I was matched up with my first mentee from the Absynthe Muse program. I read over her information, checked out her website – which is quite good, I was impressed – and sent off an introductory e-mail. I look forward to working with her. I’m also going to forward the information about Absynthe to a wonderful guy I know who does a lot of work with teens. Maybe some of his charges would be interested in the program.

After the races are done tonight, I have to write and submit my article to FemmeFan so that it can be published on Tuesday. This week has no need for “Preakness Ink”, but I’ll start running it daily next week.

I have to talk to my editor at KIC in more detail about the novellas. July 15th is our first deadline, and the plan is to have the Brother Joseph one from Widow’s Chamber and the one from Cutthroat Charlotte ready to go. I’m only planning each to run about a hundred pages. I ought to be able to get 200 pages done by July.

Of course, it depends what else comes up between now and then. I have two articles due June 1 and a chance to write a short story for a Swedish magazine that I want to try.

It’s all about balance, focus and discipline.

Today, however, is all about the Kentucky Derby.

Go, Bandini!!!
